Ce projet est né de mon premier voyage en Afrique, et tout particulièrement au Bénin. Une destination choisie après avoir fait un test ADN. En effet, après des recherches, je me suis trouvé bloqué aux portes de la plantation d'o'où était issu mon dernier ancêtre connu.
J’y ai été frappé par la ressemblance troublante entre les Béninois et les Guadeloupéens avec lesquels j’ai grandi. De cette expérience est née l’envie d’explorer les fils invisibles qui relient les Africains et les Afro-descendants à travers le monde. À travers une série grandissante de portraits et d’enregistrements sonores, je cherche à célébrer cet héritage commun, à questionner la notion d’origine et à rendre hommage à la résilience des communautés marquées par l’histoire de l’esclavage et de la colonisation.
Mon ambition est de constituer une collection de 1 000 portraits – une archive vivante qui relie continents, générations et cultures, en révélant la beauté de nos racines communes tout en donnant la parole à celles et ceux dont les histoires méritent d’être entendues.
Faces of a Shared Origin
This project was born from my first journey to Africa, and more specifically to Benin — a destination I chose after taking a DNA test. Indeed, after extensive research, I found myself blocked at the gates of the plantation from which my last known ancestor came.
There, I was struck by the uncanny resemblance between the Beninese people and the Guadeloupeans I grew up with.
From this experience emerged the desire to explore the invisible threads that connect Africans and Afro-descendants across the world.
Through a growing series of portraits and sound recordings, I seek to celebrate this shared heritage, to question the notion of origin, and to pay tribute to the resilience of communities shaped by the history of slavery and colonization.
My ambition is to create a collection of 1,000 portraits — a living archive that bridges continents, generations, and cultures, revealing the beauty of our shared roots while giving a voice to those whose stories deserve to be heard.
